Numerous clinical trials have enabled researchers to assess the efficacy of homeopathy
in treating humans—often with positive results. Conducting homeopathic clinical
trials requires the utmost rigor, including applying the usual rules of good practice.
In addition, certain studies involve a complexity that is unique to homeopathic
trials, due to homeopathy's inherent individualized approach.
By design, and as part of the clinical research process, homeopathic medicines are
compared to placebos or to no treatment. Significant positive results have been
obtained through clinical trials, for both customized and standard homeopathic treatments.
These placebo-controlled experiments were carried out by pre-selecting patients,
making it possible to include only those patients who required the same homeopathic
treatment, or by administering the same homeopathic treatment to all the patients—regardless
of their individual profiles.
The conclusions of the following studies, chosen among hundreds already carried
out, are only a preview of the ongoing clinical research. The results of the trials
already conducted must be confirmed by other similar studies, and many new trials
are necessary in order to continue confirming the relevance of homeopathic treatments.
Fibromyalgia
A recent study of 62 patients showed that personalized homeopathic treatment
is effective in treating fibromyalgia, especially with regard to pain management.
During this study, the personalized homeopathic treatment was compared with a placebo
of strictly identical appearance (double-blind trial). Patients taking the homeopathic
treatment showed significantly greater pain relief at trigger points and a reduced
tendency for depression compared with the patients taking the placebo. The study
authors believe that "using a wide selection of medicines has demonstrated that
personalized homeopathy performs significantly better than the placebo for patients
suffering from fibromyalgia."
Allergies *
In a study on allergic rhinitis, the intensity of symptoms and need for antihistamines
were reduced in patients treated with a dilution of pollens versus
in patients treated with a placebo. A later study confirmed these results, showing
that patients treated with homeopathy had increased air inhalation rate
and a better overall condition. In another study of patients suffering
from serious asthma, those treated with homeopathy also presented considerably less
intense symptoms.
Influenza-like Condition
Several studies on patients presenting the first signs of influenza proved the efficacy
of Oscillococcinum® against an influenza-like condition. With Oscillococcinum, patients
experienced relief from symptoms, including reduced fever. With Oscillococcinum®,
the number of patients cured was higher, and recovery occurred sooner, than in patients
who did not receive Oscillococcinum®.
Pain of Lactogenesis
Typically the pain of lactogenesis in women who do not wish to breastfeed is suppressed
using bromocriptine, an allopathic medicine that has side effects disproportionate
to the temporary discomfort being treated. A homeopathic clinical trial showed that
pain, mammary tension and spontaneous milk flow were relieved with homeopathy.
This study was reproduced by a second team with similar results.
Prevention of Acute Radiodermatitis *
A two-year study on 254 patients demonstrated calendula ointment’s effectiveness
in preventing acute radiodermatitis (painful inflammation of the skin) after radiotherapy
for breast cancer. The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, compared
calendula ointment with trolamine, the treatment most commonly prescribed for this
condition. Patients treated with calendula ointment showed a significantly reduced
incidence of acute dermatitis (41 percent for calendula vs. 63 percent
for trolamine), a decrease in pain levels and better compliance with treatment
by radiotherapy. The study authors say "calendula is very effective
in preventing acute radiodermatitis of second degree or higher, and should be offered
to patients following postoperative radiotherapy for breast cancer.”
Treatment of Arsenic Trioxide Poisoning *
Groundwater arsenic contamination poisons millions of people throughout the world.
A clinical study showed that the homeopathic medicine Arsenicum Album 30 CH can
attenuate the degree of arsenic poisoning in humans. A second study magnified the
results of the previous study and showed that, given in large quantities, Arsenicum
Album effectively treats patients who have been naturally poisoned by arsenic trioxide.
Acute Diarrhea
Three studies carried out on children suffering from acute diarrhea have shown a
reduction in the duration and intensity of diarrhea after the administration
of homeopathic medicines best adapted to their condition.
Hyperactivity in Children
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover clinical trial of children
diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder found a significant improvement in those
treated with homeopathic medicine compared with the placebo group. The study authors
concluded that the results “show homeopathy’s effectiveness in treating Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.”
